I have to admit that of the seven deadly sins, I have always kind of chuckled at the sin of gluttony. I mean really? What’s evil about a little turkey coma or perhaps the odd hangover from a big celebration? What real harm have I caused anyone? Even if you read the kinds of forbidden behaviors early church leaders listed for gluttony, you can’t help but be skeptical. Like “eating before meal times in order to satisfy the palate”, or “seeking delicacies and better quality of food to gratify the “vile sense of taste”. Are you kidding me? You’re telling me my sense of taste is vile? I thought it was natural? <lol>
But then I began digging into the topic more and defining it. I quickly realized there’s more to gluttony than just eating or drinking too much. The underlying psychology behind our excessive and often compulsive consumption of all kinds of things (not just food and booze) points to all kinds of sad, even toxic consequences.
So I’ve come full circle…convinced that a discussion about gluttony is as relevant and needed as ever. Join us Sunday as we explore ways that gluttony may be souring your life and those around you. You won’t regret it.
