Would it make you feel uneasy to know that 3 times in church history we threw out all the pictures and statues of Jesus and Mary, his mother, as well as the rest of the saints? The first two times this happened was called the First and Second Iconoclasm Ages (great word, hey?). Iconoclasm simply means to be against those images. In the reformation of the 1500’s we had a massive iconoclasm in the protestant movement that we still are influenced by today. But the problem is, icon veneration, which is what iconoclasm is against, seems hard for us to abandon. It’s almost human nature to insert the divine into the things of our world. And I believe, even though we are iconoclastic, we still venerate, or see God in the church more than anywhere else.

This concept is something the Christian community has struggled with since the very beginning. But my fear is that if we don’t talk about it, and we only internalize our answers, we might miss out on “seeing” God in the rest of our lives. Join us Sunday as we talk about it more.
