It feels like we are looking towards this holiday season with some measure of hope and and maybe fear or trepidation: hope that Christmas 2020 will be meaningful and connecting in ways maybe past Christmases have been, and fear of how COVID is going to impact this holiday season. Will we be able to be with family and friends? What will our celebrations look like? Will COVID take Christmas away from us along with all the other things it's taken?
While this feels like unprecedented times, and it is, but we do have records of how populations have navigated pandemics in the past (and not just pandemics: plagues, genocides, hostile occupations, nationwide floods, our world has been a scary place).
We can't make COVID go away with a snap of our fingers, so the spiritual questions we probably need to ask is how do we navigate this holiday season in a way that is special? That gives each of us life instead of taking it away? That makes this season feel like More? That ties us into a tradition that finds its roots many thousands of years ago? How do we navigate this season well?
