Hurricane Melissa Relief

Taking Water to Hurricane Melissa Survivors

In the days following Hurricane Melissa, we all saw the heartbreaking images coming out of Jamaica, Haiti, and Cuba. Entire communities were underwater. Families lost their homes, their belongings, and any sense of normalcy. As the floodwaters began to recede, the needs only grew—clean water, food, shelter, medical care, and reassurance that they weren’t facing the devastation alone.

Moments like these reminded us why Taking Water isn’t just a phrase at Friends Church—it’s a calling. When people were hurting, we showed up. When the world cracked, we responded with compassion.

That’s why Friends Church donated to the Canadian Red Cross Hurricane Melissa Appeal, supporting the organization as it worked on the ground to deliver immediate relief and long-term assistance.

Your Financial Gift Had Double the Impact

The Government of Canada matched all individual donations to the Hurricane Melissa Appeal, up to $1.5 million.
Because of that, every $1 given became $2 to support those most affected.

Contributions helped the Red Cross provide:

  • Emergency relief supplies

  • Clean water and food assistance

  • Temporary shelter

  • Medical support

  • Recovery and rebuilding resources

  • Future preparedness and resilience for vulnerable communities

These efforts evolved as needs shifted—and the needs were immense.
