It might be hard to believe, but there was a formula developed in the late 80’s for growing big Christian churches that was largely responsible for ushering in the age of the megachurch. Actually, Friends Church was built on this formula when we began 20 years ago, in 1997. There’s no denying that the formula worked. Within 5 years we were a community of over 500, and on our way to becoming one of the larger churches in Calgary.

But along with certain measures of success, came some serious issues. Issues we hadn’t anticipated and honestly, couldn’t live with. So in 2007 we embarked on a massive and very risky church renovation. At the time, outspoken critics suggested that our proposed changes would equate to church suicide. That we would never survive. It’s hard to believe that that was over 10 years ago!

Though the ride has been terrifying at times, and it has come at quite a cost, what has resulted within this community known as Friends Church, is nothing short of remarkable. I would like to tell the story this Sunday and explain the newest challenge that we face and intend to defeat on our mission to make our world a better place. Invite a friend who doesn’t fit church and get to the gym this Sunday. You’ll be glad you did.
